
While some sufferers of social phobia manage to get by life without too much difficulty, some may struggle in controlling panic attacks and desperately need help. Other than common methods of treating social phobia such as behavioral therapy and antidepressants, self help methods can also be of help. Most of us may feel a little apprehensive in situations such as; going on a first date, going to a social gathering where you don’t know anyone, and introducing yourself in a new class. These experiences for social phobia sufferers are much more feared however.
They may experience anxiety symptoms and may even have an anxiety attack. When a person experiences anxiety they be seen as; uncomfortable, fidgety, jittery and shy. Often social phobia and shyness arises from past negative experiences. Living with this disorder reduces quality of life and health.
Many feel limited with both happiness and opportunities. Negative behaviors such as self-denigration, excessive worrying, hesitation and lack of confidence, lead to un-fulfillment and underachievement. Children with social anxiety often underachieve at school and this pattern can continue to adult life. Sufferers are likely to miss opportunities in life such as relationships and jobs.
Diagnosed cases of social anxiety disorder are either treated with medication or therapy, or a combination of both. Other methods for coping with panic attacks and anxiety include lifestyle changes and self help techniques. Constant thoughts of worry and too much self-conscious thinking can spark anxiety symptoms. When a person with social anxiety steps into a room full of strangers they begin having worrying thoughts about being nervous and looking nervous. They are likely to feel cornered and a need to escape.
Social anxiety often spirals out of control from a single thought of worry which then trigger sensations and more worry. It can be difficult to stop thoughts of worry and fear, but with practice it is possible to do so. Ways to do this are by practicing self help techniques such as positive visualizations and self-talk. Expose yourself daily to situations that make you uneasy so that you can gradually build more confidence.
Increase your inner potential by reading books that help you grow and develop. Anyone can learn to be more confident it’s just a habit. You can also learn to control your emotions by putting your attention on others. Relax and feel at ease in your own skin by realizing that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Try and meet with friends more often and communicate with people more at work. Get active; join a fitness class, go swimming or go for a hike.
Get into the habit of thinking about something good several times a day. Practice breathing exercises daily to give yourself a break from stress and tension. Take action and don’t just let stress and anxiety build up by ignoring it. Breath control is a simple method in countering feelings or anxiety and controlling panic attacks.
